Plan your next trip, find a Cars and Coffee near you, or discover a local collection with the EnthusiAtlas database. Original post !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .
An hour-long westward trip from Denver on Interstate 70, Loveland Pass Road climbs from the Interstate to the timberline and upward to its namesake, Loveland Pass, at 11,990ft. Summer traffic is relatively light, though beware: the road does serve as the alternate route for hazardous material trucks, who aren’t allowed to pass through the nearby Eisenhower tunnel on the Interstate. If you’re making your way along Interstate 70, you owe yourself this short, scenic, and engaging diversion.
The six hairpins and alpine views beget a grand touring drive best experienced, in light of the altitude, behind the wheel of a forced-induction machine. Then again, the Porsche Carrera GT, Carrera 4S, and Cayman S that we eagerly trailed approached the route in a downright aggressive manner, belying any of the adverse breathing effects of high elevation. We were surprised when the Milano got a thumbs up from the Carrera GT driver; he was surprised to see us keep up with his posse.
With the fun section of Route 6 under our belts, we continued along the road for the roughly 20 miles West to Dillon, where our local ski bum friend Zach took us to the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! at the Arapahoe Cafe for the Saturday pit BBQ special. Afterward, we grabbed a beer at the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , which is apparently the hot spot for automotive engineers going out after a day of altitude testing. We ran into a few Cummins Diesel engineers that we recognized from our Cummins days, and judging by the number of Chevy Volt test vehicles in the hotel parking lot down the street, probably mingled with a few GM hybrid engineers as well.

Unless you live here, probably not. I’ve got west of Denver scouted out extremely well.

What’s your favorite route? Any tough enough to require an independent rear suspension?

Sugarloaf Rd is good. Not the greastest scenery/views but generally quiet and a fun drive. Fun paved section and turns to dirt for a bit for some rally fun. Last time I was there is needed to be graded so you have to be cautious with your line to be smooth and quick. Otherwise it will pummel your IRS. Paved part isn’t the greatest but it is good enough to get a suspension workout on with fear of breaking something. Some cracks and joints mid corner, just enough to unsettle the car a touch. Keeps you on your toes. I consider it a higher pace road. Not a whole lot of tight hair pins, but I consider that a plus.
It’s been awhile since I’ve driven it but those were the conditions last time I was on it.
That is the only one you get. I’ll be off Monday if you want a chase car.

I did 119 from Boulder to Nederland a few weeks ago which seems to be the southern version of sugerloaf rd. Caught it when the bikes weren’t out and it was wonderful.

I usually only get on the weekends. 119 is a parking lot basically then. I try to avoid it. Nice drive but I prefer open roads.
